Waterperry is famous for its apples. This weekend is Apple Weekend – a perfect celebration of our native fruit. Hosted by Chris Lanczak, the orchard manager, who often prunes with the Oxford Pruning Company, the event gives unparalleled access to the orchards, with free tours running at 11.30am, 2pm and 3.30pm.
This year Chris has more than 30 different heritage apple and juice varieties on display. There are free tastings available so if you’re thinking of growing your own apple trees, it’s a great chance to try before you buy.
Chris offers advice and information, along with the chance to get your mystery crop identified. I always try and catch him out with a particularly difficult apple to identify but he hasn’t failed yet! Last year he identified Ellison’s Orange in 3 seconds! Good work.
